Summary – This article is about the recent discovery of methane gas rising up from the surface of mars, suggesting that there could be life forms underneath the Martian surface. The scientists believe that deep enough under the surface, liquid water could still be found on Mars, which is one of the necessities for life. On Earth, organisms that live below the surface survive because the natural radioactivity there creates hydrogen and oxygen. By applying this same idea to the possible existence of life forms beneath Mars, they would be getting their other two necessities of life besides water, energy and carbon. Future missions to Mars will still be needed to prove the theory, but there is a chance that real live aliens could exist right beside us!
Opinion – I think this discovery is really cool and would be extremely beneficial to the biology world. If the methane gas rising up from the surface of Mars turns out to be from life forms, scientists could study just how different basic life forms on Mars could be from Earths’. It would also be helpful in seeing if it would be possible for humans to visit or even live below the Martian surface in the future. Also, the article mentioned how there was evidence that water once flowed across the surface of Mars, and scientists could study this evidence along with the current life forms to create the past of Mars and discover if more complex life forms used to exist on Mars. This is my opinion of what the effects of the discovery of methane rising up from Mars could mean.
