Summary:
The Wildlife Picture Index (WPI) has been designed to accurately monitor long-term trends in rare and vanishing species over large landscapes. It is a way of collecting images from remote camera traps, which automatically is sensed when anything moves past. Aswell, it is an effective tool in monitoring wildlife diversity, that previously could only be roughly estimated. At Bukit Barison Selaton National Park in Indonesia the WPI was used, and the results showed such things as a decline in the bird population, signs of poaching, illegal logging, and that the wildlife loss was even higher than the deforestation rate. Studies and research show that there is much potential with this tool, and that it can ultimately help wildlife populations everywhere.
Opinion:
I personally believe that if this Wildlife Picture Index can help the animal population, and lessen the number of threatened, endangered, and almost extinct species, then why not take advantage of such a tool. By being able to accurately see the rise and decline in populations, we can find solutions to the problems. Though in order to find a solution, you must see where the problem is coming from first, which can be identified with the WPI. As more research, continues I think that it will not only benefit the animals, but in many ways humans too. Hopefully a more diverse population and is in our future!
